New Moon in Aquarius

February’s New Moon is Monday the 8th at 19 degrees of Aquarius. This New Moon provides excellent timing to commit or recommit to important goals or initiatives that may have stalled out during the month of January. February as the New January

There is a lot of talk in the astrological community about how this year “February is the new January.”- a quote from Kelly Surtees in reference to New Year’s intentions which often are set on or around Jan 1. This year better timing for getting off to a good start with intention setting occurs on the New Moon of February 8.
Mercury’s retrograde transit in January as well as the conjunction with Pluto have both indicated a time of review or a time of rethinking how you use your mind and your thoughts rather than a time of proceeding with a new agenda. So if you have felt disheartened, February’s New Moon brings a new start.
This week as Mercury slowly moves out of Pluto’s territory and Venus finishes up her dance with Pluto after the 6th , things will begin to lighten up as they both move towards a good alignment with Jupiter – the planet of expansion and optimism.

Notes on the Week Ahead

If you have been feeling stuck the beginning of the upcoming week is a good time to get moving again. There is a beneficent Mars/Pluto aspect – harness this energy to get more energized and focused.
Venus in Capricorn is moving up to a conjunction to Pluto. We are living in transformative times –  with the Pluto/Uranus contact coming around again as it did in the Sixties. In many areas of life we see a push for a new evolutionary direction which faces significant backlash. Mistrust of the government, banking industries, religious institutions and large institutions in general is on the rise. Politics is fragmented.
Something new is trying to be born.

Full Moon in Leo on Saturday

The Moon waxes Full this Saturday 1/23 at 3 degrees of Leo at 8:46 PM EST.  Many of the prevailing aspects at this time are about advocating for what think is important in your life and how you direct the powers of your mind and your actions to that end. It bodes well under the influences to consciously identify and let go of any blocks to this process in order to make more apparent what is new and trying to manifest in your life.

Mercury Retrograde and Icarus

In ancient times there were stone statues of Mercury at crossroads – pointing the way.
I recently did a reading for a client whose astrology chart has been impacted by the Uranus/Pluto square (sudden, surprising life changing events) in a very dramatic and personal way. She is highly motivated and accomplished and has had a very successful long term career in the corporate world of finance. Suddenly and unexpectedly she was fired from her job. No explanation.
She called me for a reading to consult about it. It is hard at times like this for anyone to refocus from the perception that their life has fallen completely apart. I feel my job as an astrologer is to be like Mercury – the person at the crossroad – who is pointing the way forward. I do this by deciphering the ancient signs and symbols of her chart.
 We talked for awhile about how devastating it had been and the totally unanticipated betrayals that had occurred. After awhile I mentioned a quote I had read once about Icarus – who in his soaring flew too close to the Sun and crashed to earth – his wax wings melted. The quote was in a book of assorted writing by different authors compiled by Thomas Moore.  I couldn’t find it today – not sure who wrote it the quote about Icarus. But the essence was that Icarus crashing was not really an uncommon event. It said if you look around people are crashing all the time.
It is true that people are crashing all the time in different ways. But the real question after the crash is what is the significance of it on a deeper level and how do  discern the meaning and move forward in a well indicated way? It is really like being at a crossroads and gathering information about how to proceed.
Astrology and the Tarot readings can be invaluable guides at times like these with the many indications in astrology charts about matters of destiny, the soul’s yearnings and what kind of efforts are likely to succeed with the timing of the transits.
In our very work oriented time and culture there is a tendency towards linear thinking and a tendency to override the parts of life that have to do with the soul’s yearnings. And sometimes this is what the crashing is about- to bring the recognition to that and to give an opportunity to create a new life that honors and addresses the needs of the soul.
The time is right with Mercury retrograde in Capricorn to rethink how your life is set up now and how to move in a new more authentic direction. Pragmatics are needed of course. And addressing the needs of the soul. In a certain sense we are all at Mercury’s crossroad and can consider different choices about which way to go.

Mercury and the Future

I recently returned from a short trip to the Dominican Republic. Due to the snafu potential with travel and communications during the current Mercury retrograde period, I had scheduled  my flight out of the local airport . This involved – both on the way down and the way back – making connections elsewhere. For logistical reasons (short layovers/ going through customs/time constraints in DR ) I carried my bag on board. My bag was bulky and heavy, though and i wan’t confident about getting it in or out of the overhead bin safely. So when I would get on the plane I would look around for a kind soul who might do it for me ( the flight crew is not allowed to do it.)

I figured on the way back I would check the bag and avoid the hassell entirely but due to some Mercury retrograde snafus I ended up carrying it on  both returning flights.
I was tired of this process by my final flight back and just decided to invoke help from the universe to take care of getting the bag on and off the plane with no hassell to me at all. When i arrived at the boarding gate there was an announcement that there was limited cargo space on the plane and that anyone with a carry on bag needed to leave it at the gate for valet service – they would carry it on the plane and stow it away without my having to be involved. Upon landing I would pick it up right at the gate – no need to go to the baggage claim.
It was the second bag off the plane. This was especially good news because we had landed in a northeaster and it was supposed to start icing up a short time after my arrival – shortly after  our drive home.
With this particular Mercury retrograde it is a good idea to remember that when imagining the future you would like to see,  it is good to have a strong intention as well as faith in its becoming a reality at the foundation of your thinking. You do not need to know all the the details of how.
The Sabian symbol for Saturday’s First Quarter Moon is, “A mountain pilgrimage” and the interpretation by Marc Edmund Jones is ” “unquestioned devotion to the worth-while task at hand,” and says it calls for “”intensification of every vision to which intelligence might aspire.”
Cosmic energies support a strong determination to carry through and to persevere despite challenges along the path – to not give up but to keep on carrying on.
